Why does the pool change color after chlorine shock?

Many pool owners may have noticed that sometimes the pool water change color after adding pool chlorine. There are many reasons why pool water and accessories change color. In addition to the growth of algae in the pool, which changes the color of the water, another lesser-known reason is heavy metal staining (copper, iron, manganese).

After adding chlorine shock, algae will generally not be produced in a short time. At this time, the reason for the discoloration of the pool water is caused by the free heavy metals in the water. After heavy metals are oxidized by chlorine, metal stains will be produced in the swimming pool. This situation can be divided into two situations for investigation:

1. The raw water of the pool water itself contains metals

2. The pool water contains metals for some reason (excessive use of copper algaecides, rusting of pool equipment, etc.)

Testing (determining the source of heavy metals):

Before doing anything, you should first test the heavy metal content of raw water and pool water, and whether the pool accessories are rusted. Through these operations, you can determine the root cause of the problem that the pool owner needs to solve (whether the heavy metals come from the raw water or are generated in the pool). After determining these problems, the pool maintainer can solve the existing problems according to specific methods.

Completely removing the metals in the raw water of the pool or inside the pool is the simplest and most economical way to prevent metal staining. In order to solve the problem of heavy metals being oxidized by chlorine, it is necessary to find a professional pool maintenance personnel to detect the metal content in the water and provide a solution

1. For raw water

In order to avoid metal stains, it is recommended to test the heavy metals in the raw water before using the water in the pool. If heavy metals (especially copper, iron, and manganese) are detected in the raw water, it is recommended to replace other raw water. If there is no other choice, the heavy metal substances in the raw water need to be removed before adding to the pool. This may seem to be a lot of work and costly, but it is the simplest and most economical way to control metal stains in the pool.

2. For swimming pool water

If heavy metals are found to cause discoloration of the pool water, it should be treated immediately. Copper in the water can be removed by adding chelating agents. And let the pool maintenance staff investigate the cause in time. If it is caused by excessive copper algaecides, add chelating agents to remove copper in the water. If it is caused by rusting of pool accessories, the pool accessories need to be maintained or replaced. (Metal chelating agents, which are chemicals that can bind heavy metals such as iron and copper in the solution so that they will not be oxidized by chlorine and produce metal stains.)

Excessive heavy metals in the water will stain the water and pollute the pool after being oxidized by chlorine. Removing heavy metals from the water is imperative.
