The Situation and pH regulation of Swimming Pool Water in US

In the United States, water quality varies from region to region. Given the unique characteristics of water in different regions, we face unique challenges in the management and maintenance of swimming pool water. The pH of water plays an important role in human health. Inappropriate pH can have a certain degree of adverse effects on human skin and swimming pool equipment. The pH of water quality needs special attention and active adjustment.

Most parts of the United States have high total alkalinity, the East Coast and the Northwest have low total alkalinity, and most areas have total alkalinity above 400. Therefore, it is very important to measure your pH and the total alkalinity of your swimming pool before adjusting the pH. Adjust your pH after the alkalinity is maintained within the normal range.

If the total alkalinity is low, the pH value is prone to drift. If it is too high, adjusting the pH value will become difficult. So before adjusting the pH value, it is necessary to test the total alkalinity and maintain it at a normal level.

Normal range of total alkalinity (60-180ppm)

Normal pH range (7.2-7.8)

To lower the pH value, use sodium bisulfate (commonly called pH minus). For a 1000m³ pool, Of course, this is the amount used in our pool, and when you need to do this, the specific amount needs to be calculated and tested according to your pool capacity and the current pH value. Once you have determined the ratio, you can control and add more strictly.

However, this adjustment is temporary. The pH value often changes again within one to two days. Given the dynamic nature of the pH value in the swimming pool, it is crucial to monitor the pH value (it is recommended to measure it every 2-3 days). Pool maintenance personnel must test the water regularly and use appropriate chemicals to make necessary adjustments. This proactive approach ensures that the pH value remains in the optimal range and provides a safe and comfortable environment for swimmers.

Example

If I have a pool with a water storage capacity of 1000 cubic meters, the current total alkalinity is 100ppm and the pH is 8.0. Now I need to adjust my pH to the normal range while keeping the total alkalinity unchanged. If I need to adjust to pH of 7.5, then the amount of pH minus I add is about 4.6kg.
