General Storage Precautions
Before discussing the details, please remember that safety is always the top priority.
Keep all pool chemicals out of the reach of children and pets. Be sure to keep them in the original container (generally, pool chemicals are sold in sturdy plastic containers) and never transfer them to food containers. Store them away from open flames, heat sources, and direct sunlight. Chemical labels usually state storage conditions, follow them.
Storing Pool Chemicals Indoors
If you decide to store your pool chemicals indoors, here are some things to keep in mind:
Preferred Environments:
Indoor storage is ideal for pool chemicals because it provides a controlled environment. A garage, basement, or dedicated storage room are all good options. These spaces are protected from extreme temperatures and weather conditions. High temperatures increase the likelihood of chemical reactions and generally shorten shelf life.
Storage Containers and Labels:
Store chemicals in their original, sealed containers. Make sure those containers are properly labeled so you don’t confuse chlorine with pH enhancers. A labeling system can be a lifesaver when dealing with multiple pool chemicals.
Storing Pool Chemicals Outdoors:

Suitable Storage Locations:
There are times when outdoor storage of pool chemicals is your only option. Choose a location that is well ventilated and out of direct sunlight. A sturdy awning or shaded area under a pool shed is a great option for storing pool chemicals.
Weatherproof Storage Options:
Purchase a weatherproof cabinet or storage box designed for outdoor use. They will protect your chemicals from the elements and keep them effective.
Different chemicals have different needs. Keeping different types of chemicals separate will reduce the risk of your chemicals reacting with each other. Below are the different storage requirements for different chemicals:
Keep chlorine chemicals separate from other pool chemicals to prevent accidental mixing, which can cause dangerous reactions.
Chlorine chemicals are recommended to be stored in a cool, dry environment at 40 degrees Celsius. Extreme temperatures can cause chlorine loss.
pH adjusters:
pH adjusters are either acidic or alkaline and should be stored in a dry environment to avoid agglomeration (sodium bisulfate and sodium hydroxide tend to agglomerate). And they should be stored in acid-resistant or alkaline-resistant containers.

Algaecides and clarifiers should be stored in a temperature-controlled environment. Extreme temperatures can affect their effectiveness.

Store these chemicals in opaque containers to avoid sunlight, as sunlight may cause them to decompose.
